Expanded dialogue, reimagined cutscenes and restructured level layouts make familiar moments feel new and unpredictable again. Whether you’ve played the original or are visiting this terrifying world for the first time, there are plenty of surprises in store.

Retrained
Leon is even better equipped to battle the hordes of Ganados than before. Fans of the original will immediately notice the added fluidity and freedom to his movement, and all players will appreciate the renewed focus on Leon’s knife skills. Previously a last-resort weapon, knives are now an essential tool that enable stealth kills, last-second escapes and attack-deflecting parries.

Revitalized
A stunning graphical upgrade and fully redesigned audio takes the detail, the atmosphere and the animation of Resident Evil 4 to the next level. The PlayStation 5 version lets you prioritise frame rate or resolution, with support for ray tracing. The game also makes the most of the DualSense wireless controller’s features, using the internal speaker for radio communications, and utilising the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to give weapons an even greater sense of weight and power.

Reorganized
The satisfaction of a well-organised attaché case was one the original game’s subtler pleasures, allowing you to organise your inventory as efficiently – or as chaotically – as you liked. This iconic system returns for the remake, with the addition of an auto-sort feature for those who want to focus on the action, and a selection of unlockable cases and attachable charms that grant Leon a variety of perks.

Retooled
As with the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, it’s now possible to assign weapons to the directional pad and quick-swap between them in the heat of battle. With the right items, you can also create additional ammo – and you’re going to need it. Unique to the Resident Evil 4 remake is the ability to sell key items that are no longer useful for extra pesetas, and the repurposing of the collectible spinel gems as a tradable resource for unique items.
